the english house is situated on the A379 between torquay and shaldon just 2 miles from torquay. the hotel is only one mile from the south west coastal path, with easy access to three secluded beaches.

the english house hotel and restaurant is situated in the quiet hamlet of maidencombe just two miles from torquay, owned and run by steve and hilary mabbutt.

steve and hilary have created a very special place which is hidden within an unimposing exterior of an edwardian detached house set in two acres. the interior of the building has been completely refurbished. their style is distinctive and uncluttered. strikingly modern but full of character with every detail carefully thought out - a place to relax with the emphasis on some very special food.

from the main entrance you enter a lounge and bar where you will be offered a drink before dinner whilst you consider what you would like to eat from the menu which changes every month completely.

steve is a trained chef from london and food at the english house takes the highest priority.

as it’s name suggests the english house specialises in english food, definitely with a modern twist, but definitely not nouvelle cuisine. there are always 5 starters, 5 main courses and 5 desserts plus a fantastic english cheese board.
